| About Empowered Births© I attended my first birth at the age of 17 when I received a slightly confident, slightly panic-stricken phone call at 5am in the morning from a friend of mine. "Dionne, it's time" she said. I was not a part of her birth plan and I certainly never imagined that I would have received this call. However I learned the two most important lessons about childbirth: 1. Plans change, i.e. Anything can happen and 2. What needs to be done, will be done, i.e. What needs to happen will happen My friend, Ericka, was 18 and left abandoned by both her parents and her partner and was alone. I remember being in awe of how calm and collective she was in spite of her growing pain. All of her bags were packed and she even joked about my "jalopy" of a car not breaking down on the way to the hospital. For some reason, as the labor quickly progressed and seven hours later as she welcome her son into the world, I was never asked to leave the delivery room. I attended five births over the next three years, all by teen-aged mothers. I often joke that I was the only one with a car that answered the phone at 2 in the morning! Many times the partner or other family member was present at these births, but I was never asked to leave the room. At each birth I was amazed at how these seemingly meek young women instantly transformed into the strong forces of nature that we call mothers. I've been catering to women in labor for over 12 years now and every time I receive a phone call in the middle of the night, I know "it's time". Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Please feel free to call with any questions, or just to share your story. Peace, Dionne |
