Literally translated, it means "woman of service". Q. What kinds of Doulas are there. A. Doulas are broken up into three aspects 1. Prenatal 2. Labor & Delivery 3. Postpartum Q. What do Doulas do? A. A Prenatal Doula will offer childbirth education classes and assist you in designing a birth plan. She will also educate you and your partner in pain relieving techniques that will help you in L&D A Labor & Delivery Doula will assist you and your partner with pain relieving techniques and will serve as your personal emotional & physical aide while in L&D. She will stay with you until you and your baby are safe. A Birth story may also be provided. A Post partum Doula offers an array of services. They may range from answering any questions about your new baby to assisting in care of you and child. Most prepare hot meals, watch other children, do light housekeeping, and run errands. Others are lactation specialists. Q. What is a Birth Plan? A. A Birth Plan is the vision that you have for delivering your baby and the steps essential in bringing that into fruition. It may entail everything from who you would like in the room to what kind of pain relieving techniques to what to do in case of complications. Q. What are childbirth education classes and what should I learn from them? A. Childbirth education classes are the classes that prepare you and your partner for giving birth. They should go over the entire birth process and should include pain relief, complications, unexpected events, your rights as a patient, interventions, breastfeeding, and post partum care. |
